New evidence of the benefits of social pedagogy approach - ‘Social pedagogy appears to provide a sound model for staff working with Child Sexual Exploitation affected young women in a residential setting. It supports their work with individuals and provides a powerful rationale for empowering young women to be actively involved in their lives’ (St Christopher's Evaluation - Williams et al. 2017).
Social Pedagogy is an emerging field in the UK but well established in continental Europe, where theory and practice is concerned with finding solutions to social problems through an educational lens.
A programme of cross-national research showing good results for children and young people in other European countries led to feasibility studies in the UK. These in turn led to training programmes, supported by employers and educational institutions, which introduce social pedagogic approaches to practitioners working with disadvantaged children and young people.
SPPA is supporting the development of qualifications including two diplomas in social pedagogy – at Level 3 and Level 5 in England (and equivalent Levels in other UK countries). These will be delivered by Jacaranda and ThemPra.
